S

Project Description

S worked to collaboratively expand on previous media work centering the narratives of formerly incarcerated people, to bring forth critical issues in the American criminal legal system.

S has worked with organizations to receive recommendations on literature and other resources to consult when conducting background research; identify formerly incarcerated people and policy experts who would be interested in sharing their experiences; received feedback on scripts and drafts of episodes; and create calls-to-action for listeners to support the criminal justice reform/prison abolition work of the organizations she works with.

Abolitionist Media Collective

The Abolitionist Media Collective is a group of artists who work in partnership with Boston-based abolitionist groups to document and uplift their stories and anti-carceral organizing work.

Artist Bio

S (she/her) is a student of abolition, passionate about dismantling the prison industrial complex in the United States and internationally. S arrived at abolitionist politics during her time as a writer at her college newspaper, where she reported on criminal justice reform legislation that passed in Massachusetts. While there, S recognized the ways in which reformist reforms deepen criminalization and expand the prison industrial complex. Beyond her work as a storyteller, S is a researcher of carceral technologies and restorative justice. She is grateful to RIRJ for the opportunity to be in community with artists and organizers who are working to realize a radical vision for racial justice in Boston.

“As a journalist, I believe the most powerful form of truth is one’s story. Narratives that formerly incarcerated people share with me are complimented with conversations with lawyers, community organizers, and policy experts.”
